Who is the most influential Ghost in the Christmas Carol?
Who is the most influential ghost in the Christmas Carol? When looking at this, you must think of three things. First, who is the Ghost that set up the next ghost? Who allowed the affects of the next to take affect? Second, you must understand Scrooge and why he was the way he was. Lastly, the reader must try to see the fact that even though one ghost was more influential then the other, they all where needed to help Scrooge. Because of these three reasons, I think the ghost of Christmas Present is the most influential.
The first ghost set up the story, but Scrooge already condoned his past. To show him the pain and the good did not help, because those things led Scrooge to be the cold-hearted man he is. People who are affected need to see something better then what they have had, and the first ghost just showed Scrooge that he didn’t like Christmas for. I think the only thing the ghost did was show the good of Christmas. But it was not a big enough impact and so it didn’t change Scrooge’s mind. Scrooge said, once he woke up from his first ghosts encounter, that maybe it was just a bad dream, and he can forget about it. Scrooge didn’t feel the effects from the Ghost. Because of this it was the Ghost of Christmas Present. The ghost showed how Scrooge’ life is right at this moment. He showed how others where affected by Scrooge and by poverty. The Ghost showed him that Scrooge didn’t think things through. If the second ghost didn’t do these things, the last ghost would have had no influence. This ghost led up to the influence and gave a large amount of it as well.
Scrooge was born into a lost world. He was different then his classmates and so he had no friends. His mother died at birth and so his father disowned him. The only love he had was that of his little sister. The all the pains where just building up. Then he found an apprenticeship and everything seemed a bit better. But that only led him to his next pain. He fell in love and became a very wealthy man. His wealth consumed him and soon he lost his love. All of the things in Scrooge’s life left him in pain. That’s why the second ghost had a great affect. The second ghost showed Scrooge what he became, not what he was. That led to him finding out what he might become. Scrooge was fearful of the future only because the present seemed to be so bad.
As I said, the first ghost helped set up the story. But that didn’t have enough of an impact on Scrooge. Jacob, Scrooge’s partner, could have said that two ghosts would visit him and Scrooge would have still changed. The second ghost not only showed Scrooge what he was, but it led to what he would become. He showed how the money lust that Scrooge had would lead to the death of a child. The Ghost of Christmas Present was needed which already makes him second best. But what makes him the most influential was the fact he was able to have Scrooge accept that he needed change. It was early in the last ghost when Scrooge said “I will change, so the be gone, I say I will change”. The ghost didn’t do anything so influential that Scrooge would change his mind, so it had to be the Ghost of Christmas Present that led him to that mind set.
The story led us to all believe that we must change. It showed that Scrooge could change in one nights time, if he looked over everything in his life and realized what he would become. The Ghost of Christmas Present showed Scrooge the mistakes of his past and how they truly affected him. He used Scrooge’s words against him. He also showed what Scrooge would become if he followed the path he was on. The Ghost led the story, and it would not have been able to continue with out him. This is why we must learn from our past, understand our present, and see what we will become in the future.
