Remember The Titans

Remember the Titans shows many resemblances towards the plot diagram, yet it does have many differences. These similarities and differences shall be discussed. The main thing when looking at this diagram is personal opinions. Many people will say that there is a certain part in the movie that is the rising action, yet others will say that there are many rising actions. This writing prompt is based off of both fact and opinion. Our opinions back up how we see the factual parts in this prompt. The main points to look at are Identifying the Elements, Rising action, Climax, Failing action and the Conclusion within the movie.
The elements of the movie are easy to figure out. The story takes place in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1971. This provides the setting of the movie, which is part of the main elements. The next part is called identifying the characters. The two main characters are the African American Coach Boon. The other character is the white Coach Yokes. They both bring a lot of points into the movie because neither one of them are racist, yet both of them have to deal with the power of the other race. Coach Boon takes over the head job of the white coach, inflicting on his chance to get into the hall of fame. He then had the chance to take over Boon’s job which, after saying no, he lost any chance to be in the hall of fame. He showed that after a while he knew that Boon deserved that job as much as he did. They fought together to win the last game. They are both protagonist, and fight for what they believe is right. The antagonist would have to be any racist personal within the movie. This includes the other white coach on the team as well as most of the parents protesting against the integration of blacks into white schools. These are the three elements of the plot; setting, characters and pro/antagonist.
There are many rising actions in this movie. That is due to how many climaxes are in the movie. The first one would have to be the first main protest scene. A black person was shot and whites and blacks became enraged. Due to this the state agreed to integrate the schools and football teams. It took one death to show the people that change was needed. The next rising action is when the black players meet the white players and go to camp. They fight each other and cant stand one another but they learn to get along. After this the next rising action is when they get back from camp and have to deal with the racist mothers trying to keep the blacks out. These first three are all major racist actions but all become resolved. This movie doesn’t have one climax, it has multiple. The next rising action is when they win their first game, then the next. Then Reverend, the quarter back, is tackled and his wrist breaks, which was due to one of the white players lack of blocking. After that the team finally works together completely. The next rising climax, and the biggest one is when the captain of the team is involved in a car accident that paralyzes him. These are the main rising climaxes that lead to many climaxes.
The climax is split into major climaxes. The main point is overcoming racism. The first climax is the unity of the team at Gettysburg camp. They begin to become friends and know that if they want to do what they love they must work together. The next climax is when the team becomes a complete unity from the broken wrist of Reverend. The team kicks off the white blocker and because of this they learn to fight together and they win all the games. The next climax is when the main white player is paralyzed, and the team has the intensity to fight the last game and win. These are the major climaxes in the whole movie.
The fourth part on the plot diagram is the falling action. This provides all the loose ends and how they are tied up. The movie doesn’t follow this, however. It goes straight from the climax to the resolution. One of the loose ends is who through a brick through the window of coach Boon. They never clarify who did it, just that it happened. Another loose end is who ran into the white player causing his paralyzation. There are some others, such as how one of the players died at the end of the movie, a few years later.
The last element is the resolution. This shows how everything is concluded. There is only one major ending that is worth talking about. That is the winning of the last game. This ends all the fighting and most the racism. The shows who is the strongest both in power and will, and it shows that the blacks and whites can work together. Coach Boon and Coach Yolks are perfect icons towards how the racism is solved. They both secretly didn’t like each other, but it wasn’t the person they didn’t like. It was the situation they where placed in. Boon knew that if he lost he would have to give up being a coach, and Yolks had already lost his spot for the hall of fame due to his understanding of how the world needed to be.
To conclude this essay, racism is the largest part of this movie. Without racism nothing in the movie would happen. The movie shows how things where and how things can change. It perfectly portrays racisms and the effects of racism. The car crash, the tackle, everything in the movie shows that some can work together and some can only continue the hate of everyone. Yet people need to realize that everyone is only as different as they let on to be. It is the people of the world that allow racism to continue and the movie shows that everyone can overcome the pain they have to go through.
