    What I learned

What is their to learn in a quarter of pure presentation. Our teacher has already taught us what it means to have Ethos, how to gain Logos, and how to express our Pathos. He has already taught us how to use MLA format in our writing. We already knew how to create a power point. SO, what is it that he taught us. What is it that we all gained when we ended the last quarter? He didn't teach us anything really. We taught ourselves. We gained the ability to research, create a power point, speak in front of others, and write the essay we needed. This class forced us to either succeed or fail. We learned the most important lesson so far. We learned how to try to be better in everything we do. We learned this in three ways. First was giving us a time limit. Second was giving us a difficult job with the knowledge that we will fail if we dont do anything. Finally, he made us grow up.
When we came into this class the third quarter we had to read a book, finish a power point, and research a social issue. This was the job that was given and if it was not done, we fail. By giving me a time limit, he forced me out of my procrassination shell and made me work my arse off to be better. I had to read a book that was longer then most. I did. I had to make a power point and a social issue that was unlike most. I did. I had to present infront of the whole class and make it interesting for all. I did. I learned to work in the time limit given and do the best I can. By giving us a time limit, we became better students and individuals.
The second lesson I learned was working with a difficult job. I got the book done and I got the power point done. But picking a topic was the hardest part. I had to figure out how to get a topic that related to everyone, and that I could feel passionate about. I found that topic, and I worked hard to finish it. The research was also hard. The topic I picked was more moral then it was logically. I had to turn our morals into the right logic in order to change the minds of many. But, I did well in my attempt. I told the class that if they didnt change, they might get away for a bit. But eventually they would fall into my issue, and not know what to do.
Finally, our teacher made us grow up. We had to get up infront of the whole class in order to finish our presentation. The second largest fear in America is public speaking. We had to over come our trials and our fears and GROW UP. How can we live life if we are afraid to talk infront of our peers. Our peers judge the actions that we give, and so we have to be able to interact with them. Mr. Pitcher made us get up there and talk or fail. That was our only option and most of us found ourselves getting up their and attempting what we had. The biggest lesson of all is to over come ones fear.
We all learned individual lessons, thats how life is. I learned many lessons in this quarter that helped me. The biggest was owning up to what I have done and how I have done it. If I didnt do the work, I would have to show that I didnt. My biggest fear is letting my leaders down because I didnt try. So I tried. I worked my arse off to be a better speaker, presenter, researcher, and finally I succeeded. This essay is giving me the grade I deserve. I deserve whatever A or B I get, but at least I tried. But for those that tried and failed, them trying is the real lesson. Thank you.

    Corruption In Three Forms
Life is a corrupting process from the time a child learns to play his mother off against his father in the politics of when to go to bed; he who fears corruption fears life.
    - Saul Alinsky
The world as we know it, whether it be crime or justice, all comes down to one thing. Influence. Influence tells a child to disobey their parent or to follow the rules set for them. Influence holds the reins behind every man, woman, and child’s actions towards anything. We hear excused for the person’s action ever day. They where under the influence of drugs or alcohol, peer pressure, or they didn’t know what the consequences would be. Influence is what makes our society rise above all or fall under them. But, what is influence to the people who are harmed by it? Influence is Corruption to the mind. People who harm the society by crimes and disapproving actions where corrupted by one thing or the other. They could have been corrupted by the idea that what their government does and gets away with should be rebelled against. They could put their whole lives into the church and believe when they do a crime it is for a higher power. They could even be working for a corporation that deals in unlawful actions, and they fall in line. What ever it is, Corruption is the one thing that destroys our moral society every day.
There are three types of corruption that hold water over all. These three are Religious Corruption, Corporal Corruption, and Governmental Corruption. When you live your life believing so highly in one of these three organizations, any action they do you think it justified. The Catholic religious scandals of sexual abuse to children is the what we must understand as possible for ever religion. If one religion can do so, what is it that stops other religions from following the same actions. When a Government tries to pass laws that restrict the people against their moral beliefs, it shows that the government has power and all others must fall in line. This leads to uprising, higher crimes and a more unlawful society. The prohibition act tried to take away all alcohol, believing that it was the reason behind so much crime. Once taken away, it was the sole reason for the rise in gangs and the start of the Mafia. In the early nineteen twenties and late thirties, the law of Bribe and Influence was put in place because Mafia members and Corporations would give money to political officials in the belief that those officials would try to pass or influence bills in the corporations favor. These three corruptions are the bases behind why our society has, is and will fail morally if we do not do something to change it.
Political corruption may be defined as bribery, graft, extortion, robbery, patronage, nepotism, cronyism, conflict of interest and kickbacks. Ethically questionable behaviors have haunted American politics from the time Europeans settled country. In the 1920’s the prohibition of alcohol was an attempt to lower the crime rate of crimes influenced by alcohol. Within several years the action failed as rebellion and the rise in gang leaders rose. This was the rise of the American Mafia, and some of the worlds worst criminals. Actions such as these where not influenced by the population. The government didn’t ask people if it was a wise decision, they just acted. If our government has the ability to do things such as these, what is stopping them from doing worse? Well, luckily there are things such as the constitution that makes it harder for the government to do these types of things. Yet, if they can influence, or corrupt our nation to believing we need something, what constitutional rights are they breaking. On September 11, 2001, the first major terrorist action was made on American soil. When the twin trade towers came down, people where in a frenzy. The government took advantage of this frenzy and passed the Suspected Terrorist Act, which allowed them to break any constitutional right on an individual if that individual is suspected of being a terrorist or having contact with Terrorist. This might be one of the largest scandals, or conspiracies ever put in action within the United States. This led to the RFID Chip Conspiracy, making people think that soon they will be putting in chips that allow the government to locate any person in the United States, for safety precautions. (National News Paper Article) How many people have to be influenced in order for the government to take full control of our rights? When will we learn that yes we need order, but we need order for the people and by the people, not above the people? We must learn that when the government attempts to influence us in order to pass a law, we must look at the law without bias opinion and determine the harmful affects of it.
When the prohibition act to eliminate alcohol failed, corporations and gang organizations used the money they gained to pay off governmental officials in order to pass laws. Once this outrage hit the view of the people, the Bribery and Influence Act was put in place. This act was put in place to keep any individual or organization from bribing or influencing any governmental official. This included stat officials such as cops, and went all the way up to the President of the state. Yet, there was one large flaw in this act. Business’ where still allowed to donate money to whoever they wanted to win an election, which allowed a relationship between that official and the business. As long as they claimed it was only for donations, they got away with it. The banks of the United States have recently been put in financial distraught. This is because they influenced the government to allowing them to hand out loans. The Banks began handing out loans for so many that it eventually hit them back to the point that they lost money on the loans. They needed the government to bail them out. Many business’ rely on the government to help them get out, and the biggest way to do this is to pay them off. Now, this is one of the largest scandals of the Corporation. (News Article) Yet, there are small things that happen daily that are corrupt. On January 21, 2010, a corporate owner told his council he was going on a business trip. The trip was less business as it was a family vacation, yet he still dipped into the money of the business fund. So many corporate owners do this every day because they believe they can get away with it. Well we allow these people to get away with it. In World War 2, Adolph Hitler gained the ability to sway the people with his words and actions. He united a fallen country, and began to take over nearly all of Europe. The people looked at him so highly that they allowed themselves to be blind sided. They where blind sided by what was really going on in the world. They knew that Hitler believed all Jews, Blacks, Hispanics and any one not of his race needed to be exterminated. A whole population of Germany believed in this ludicric ideal because they didn’t know what else to believe. They didn’t understand that what they had the ability to do was more powerful then what Hitler attempted to do. You are the future of your governmental beliefs, and if we do not change we will be blind sided again. We must stop these corrupt actions before they affect the people even more.
The most important thing we must stop is Religious Corruption. Now 76 % of the U.S population claims to be Christian. That would be about 228,000,000 people that claim to be Christian. This statistic was taken in 1990 but lets still use it for today. If we assume that half of these people go to church, and we don’t include children, we would have at little under 100,000,000 people that go to church ever Sunday. These people devote their lives to the religion. When your values are linked with your beliefs, it becomes one of the hardest things to change. You must understand that your views are not truly your own. Your teacher, parents and in this case your religious headman or women put ideas into your head that change your views. This is called influence, and isn’t completely bad. But when the line between influence and corruption mix together you have a problem. The Catholic church has been harmed with acquisition such as Sexual Scandals and Child Abuse. These acquisitions have been predominantly in Ireland. The people who accused the Church asked for 318 million dollars in settlement for the sexual abuse. (Popular magazine) We hear about these sexual scandals ever single day, whether it be in the news or on T.V, such as Family Guy. Although nation-wide enquiries have only been conducted in the United States and Ireland, cases of clerical sexual abuse of minors have been reported and prosecuted in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and other countries. In 1994 allegations of sexual abuse on 47 young seminaries surfaced in Argentina. In 1995 Cardinal Hans Herman Groer resigned from his post as Archbishop of Vienna, Austria over allegations of sexual abuse, although he remained a Cardinal. In Australia more than 12 priests of the archdioceses of Canberra and Goulburn, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Townville, Ballarat, Bunbury, Wagga Wagga and Marist Fathers of Tasmania were convicted for sexual abuse. Therefore, if you look at just these acquisitions you see nothing but corruption. Yet, this is not the only bad the Religious Society has done. The Catholic religion states that the only true way to go to heaven after sins are committed is for you to repent all your sins to the lord all mighty. Yet, in the Eleventh Century, the Catholic Church, along with the English government, allowed you to buy out your dead from hell. You paid the church to force a confession upon the dead. While every Religion has the ability, and most likely, to help people from distraught moments in their life, they also have the ability to influence and corrupt not only a sect group but nearly the whole population of the world. It is because of this that you should not look towards your religion so highly that they cannot possibly be wrong, but instead see them as a way to help you get where you want to go, but only as a friend, not a leader.
In Summer, we are being influenced every day. These influences change us to being one way or another. Eventually one of these influences crosses the line into corruption, and eventually harms society. As we have seen from the ideals of select governmental officials, if we allow ourselves to be pushed into one select idea without being able to see the ideas behind it, then we just blind ourselves. We must be able to see everything for what it and look at it with out
bias standards. As we seen in Corporate corruption, if we depend to much on the government and fail, we not only fail ourselves but we fail the people. It is because of the U.S Bank Bailouts that the economy went from bad, to worse. Finally, as we have seen with Religious corruption, if we base our beliefs solely on one ideal, and don’t attempt to seek other ideals, we get set up for let down after let down.

    What I learned last quarter?
“Human being, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so” – Douglas Adams
Within the last two months I have learned to use Ethos, Pathos, and Logos to understand the in class literature. I gained the ability to see the credibility with the author and people within that literature. I had to understand why the author said this, or why he made the main character do whatever it was he did. Then I had to feel the emotion the author gave in the book. When the character cried, I had to understand and feel that pain. When he was happy, I could feel a spark of joy within my own life. Finally, I had to see the logic behind every part of the story. Some of the literature was largely tipped towards one part. It was either ethos, pathos and logos, yet it needed each to make the story understandable to the reader. The literature of this quarter where highly centered around these three ideas, and kept us wanting to find more credibility, emotion and logic within what we read.
Ethos was a very difficult ideal to understand. We where to understand not only the characters of the story but the author as well. In the speeches by Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln and Mark Anthony, we could easily see why what they said was important. They where all very high in society in some way, so the people where obliged to listen to them. Yet in novels such as the Night, we had to see the credibility through experience. When Ellie fought to survive the concentration camps, we understood that the author was credible through past experience. When we saw the movie “The Christmas Carol” we could only see the credibility of the ghosts through what they showed Scrooge. The ghosts were not high in society, and they didn’t experience anything that was noticeable. So the only way we wanted to listen to them was because they where an entity we could not comprehend, which makes us want to comprehend more. Ethos helped us see what the reasons where behind the ideals of the story, but they also helped us understand the actions of people within the real world.
Pathos, to me, was extremely easy to comprehend. I am a poet and a writer so I use pathos all the time. Yet, when you can see pathos in every moment of the story, then you start to see the idea of the story itself. In the Christmas Carol, Scrooge’s dislike of everything led him to be greedy towards everything, and believe everyone is out to get him. Ghost one used pathos by building up sorrow in Scrooge and making him see his past mistakes or joy. Then the Ghost of Christmas Present used the sorrow that was built up and forced Scrooge to see how his past mistakes and who was today was affecting everyone around him. This led the last ghost being able to show that Scrooge’s past and present faults would lead him to the biggest pathos, death and fear of death. In the book, the Night, Ellie went through pathos after pathos. The fact he was torn away from his mother and sister is a large pathos right there. The emotion he must have felt was nothing compared to the sadness we felt as we read the book. But without pathos we would never be able to feel the pain of Ellie, or any other character in any book.
Logos was yet another hard lesson to learn. When we think of logic we tend to think of math, or equations, or statistics. Never do we think of the base logic. In Hamlet, the base logic was that his father was murdered and it was his job to get revenge. There was no statistic in it so we had to see logic in a whole new light. In the book, The Night, we saw another base logic. The Jewish community was being torn from society and the people had to survive to continue the life of there people. It was hard to understand the base logic, but with pathos the logic was shown better. If the author can connect some way with the reader, then the reader can understand the ideals in an easier form.
Even though we learned about Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, the biggest thing I learned was that you must have each one in order to have a well made story. Ethos allows us to understand why the logos and pathos is important. If it was just a hobo who was talking about a war he never went through, no one would want to read it. We would not have a connection with the story and so we would be less incline to care. Yet if the hobo talked to us about dumpster diving, as in the book Dumpster Diving, we understand that this is true, or that this person has a vast amount of credibility towards the subject. Once the Ethos is set up, pathos and logos must be used to keep the reader interested in the information. Through the last quarter we all struggled to grasp onto this information, and once we did we finally could see literature and the world in a whole new way. Ethos is the credibility of the author or characters, Pathos is the emotions behind the story and the ideas, and Logos is the base logic that the story contains. Using these three ideals, we can go on to the next educational experience ready to understand, learn, and finally become who we wish to become.

    English 12 Tanner Trimble
    Period 6 December 23, 2009
Who is the most influential Ghost in the Christmas Carol?
Who is the most influential ghost in the Christmas Carol? When looking at this, you must think of three things. First, who is the Ghost that set up the next ghost? Who allowed the affects of the next to take affect? Second, you must understand Scrooge and why he was the way he was. Lastly, the reader must try to see the fact that even though one ghost was more influential then the other, they all where needed to help Scrooge. Because of these three reasons, I think the ghost of Christmas Present is the most influential.
The first ghost set up the story, but Scrooge already condoned his past. To show him the pain and the good did not help, because those things led Scrooge to be the cold-hearted man he is. People who are affected need to see something better then what they have had, and the first ghost just showed Scrooge that he didn’t like Christmas for. I think the only thing the ghost did was show the good of Christmas. But it was not a big enough impact and so it didn’t change Scrooge’s mind. Scrooge said, once he woke up from his first ghosts encounter, that maybe it was just a bad dream, and he can forget about it. Scrooge didn’t feel the effects from the Ghost. Because of this it was the Ghost of Christmas Present. The ghost showed how Scrooge’ life is right at this moment. He showed how others where affected by Scrooge and by poverty. The Ghost showed him that Scrooge didn’t think things through. If the second ghost didn’t do these things, the last ghost would have had no influence. This ghost led up to the influence and gave a large amount of it as well.
Scrooge was born into a lost world. He was different then his classmates and so he had no friends. His mother died at birth and so his father disowned him. The only love he had was that of his little sister. The all the pains where just building up. Then he found an apprenticeship and everything seemed a bit better. But that only led him to his next pain. He fell in love and became a very wealthy man. His wealth consumed him and soon he lost his love. All of the things in Scrooge’s life left him in pain. That’s why the second ghost had a great affect. The second ghost showed Scrooge what he became, not what he was. That led to him finding out what he might become. Scrooge was fearful of the future only because the present seemed to be so bad.
As I said, the first ghost helped set up the story. But that didn’t have enough of an impact on Scrooge. Jacob, Scrooge’s partner, could have said that two ghosts would visit him and Scrooge would have still changed. The second ghost not only showed Scrooge what he was, but it led to what he would become. He showed how the money lust that Scrooge had would lead to the death of a child. The Ghost of Christmas Present was needed which already makes him second best. But what makes him the most influential was the fact he was able to have Scrooge accept that he needed change. It was early in the last ghost when Scrooge said “I will change, so the be gone, I say I will change”. The ghost didn’t do anything so influential that Scrooge would change his mind, so it had to be the Ghost of Christmas Present that led him to that mind set.
The story led us to all believe that we must change. It showed that Scrooge could change in one nights time, if he looked over everything in his life and realized what he would become. The Ghost of Christmas Present showed Scrooge the mistakes of his past and how they truly affected him. He used Scrooge’s words against him. He also showed what Scrooge would become if he followed the path he was on. The Ghost led the story, and it would not have been able to continue with out him. This is why we must learn from our past, understand our present, and see what we will become in the future.

The next thing that I love to write is short novels. I play alot of video's games and read alot of books so I have a big ideas in my mind. I use what games I have played and read and use them to make new ideas. The ideas are basic ideas and I have written a few small novels. They express my life and how I wish things were in life. When things are hard in my life I usually read a book or play a video game. They are the only things that completly get my mind off of the harshness of life.
The most important thing that I use in my writing is an internal list of subjects. Anything I watch on t.v I can write onto a paper. I use what I learn on the T.V as a way to write things about multiple subjects. Alot of my facts come to real life t.v, alot of my fantasy novels come from games and movies. Its just a way to help my writing become better then it is. But my memory does faulter some times so that is a problem. Overall it is the most important because it allows me to express my heart and my mind in the same way.
Poetry, short novels and a list of internal info is how I write essays. My writing process all falls down to one thing and that is emotions. I cant be anything without my emotional ability. It is the only way I can become anything that I want to become. The emotions I hold inside are because of many things. But everyone has to find something that influences them when they write. So when I write it is only because I have the intensity to show my heart to whoever reads my story.
